Grenville musters 1764-1767

Introduction.

This information is taken from an article in Mariner's Mirror by David Bonner Smith entitled Cook and the Grenville with some additional material taken from the Logs of the Grenville for the period.

1763.

From June to August 1763, Cook was employed surveying the French islands of St.-Pierre and Miquelon. To assist him, he had two seamen, James Biddon and Peter Flower. At the completion of the survey, Cook and his assistants were taken to St. John's where Cook was given charge of the schooner Grenville.

The Grenville and Cook sailed north to the northern tip of Newfoundland where he surveyed three harbours, Noddy, Quirpon and Croque. They also crossed to Labrador, where Chateau (York) Harbour was charted. Cook, Biddon and Flower were joined by seven sailors from the Antelope to handle the schooner (at this time, December 2004, their names are not known).

A draughtsman from the Ordnance Department at the Tower in London, Edward Smart, joined them at St. John's on their return there in late September.

Each of the other ships on the Newfoundland station contributed two men so that the Grenville had a full complement. A full list of names is not available as at December 2004.
