Bird drawings and paintings from Cook's voyages.

Birds were collected, described and drawn on all three of Cook's voyages. For many species it was the first time they had been studied and they were classified using the system recently developed by Linnaeus in Uppsala, Sweden. Many of the classifcations ascribed have since been replaced and the lists below attempt to show both the original and current names.

Voyage One - Sydney Parkinson.

The young Scottish Quaker, Sydney Parkinson, was the artist on Cook's first voyage. He is principally known for his botanical illustrations but he also painted bird specimens collected and described by Daniel Solander and Joseph Banks. Parkinson sadly died on the voyage so most of his drawings and paintings were never published.

His bird paintings are contained in Volume 1 of his unpublished drawings held by the Natural History Museum (NHM) in London. The Museum has made available images of many of the paintings (here designated by a NHM number). Eventually links will be added to those images.
