French Explorers
This page is a starting point for information about Eighteenth Century French Explorers
of the Pacific, especially Jean-Francois de Galaup de Laperouse and Louis-Antoine de
Bougainville. While James Cook remains the paramount
figure of Pacific exploration there were several French explorers whose achievements deserve
coverage but whom the English speaking world has all but ignored. Among these sailors were
De Surville, Bougainville, Marion Dufresne, Laperouse and D'Entrecasteaux and eventually I
hope to provide information and links for all of them.
I am starting with Jean-Francois de Galaup de Laperouse and Louis-Antoine de Bougainville as
I am preparing material about them for a
book I hope to have published in the near future. The book will follow a similar style and
format to my first book Captain Cook's world
Jean-Francois de Galaup de Laperouse
