The Endeavour Replica has finished its second tour of New Zealand. In late May, the Replica sailed from New Plymouth bound for Lord Howe Island and on to Sydney where it will be based for the Olympics (it will undertake a trip to Southport in Queensland first). Compared to its first visit, this tour of NZ was more low-key but no less successful. The port visits all drew good crowds and there were plenty of volunteers to sail the various sea passages.
A New Zealand television company has reported that it is in the preliminary stages of making a documentary series about the maritime history of New Zealand. Apparently, at least one program will deal with Captain Cook's contribution to this country and they will revisit the places visited by Cook. It will be interesting to see if this project comes into being as two other ventures in recent years appear to have come to nought. Two years ago an ex-CCSU member from Alaska was talking about a documentary dealing with Cook's voyages in the Pacific while last year the Sunday Star Times carried an article about a Hollywood director's plan to make a film about Cook with Ralph Fiennes in the title role.
In August 2000, Random House New Zealand is publishing John Robson's book "Captain Cook's world: maps of the life and voyages of James Cook R.N." As yet, nothing is finalised but I am hoping that as part of the events linked to the book's launch there can be a small function held in Auckland to which members of the CCSU will be invited. Our membership is just holding its own (see piece below) but we now have several members in the Greater Auckland area so it would be good to get together. I will let people know closer to the time.
