m.i.d. London Gazette 05th August 1915 mentioned in General Sir Ian Hamilton's despatch of 20th May 1915.

M.C. (Military Cross) London Gazette 03rd June 1915 citation 03rd July 1915. On 26th April, 1915 during operations in the neighbourhood of Gaba Tepe, for gallantry in action, and again on the night of the 02nd-03rd May, for exceptional bravery and devotion to duty. All the officers of his company being killed or wounded, he organised and led the company, continually exposing himself for four hours, and showing fine military spirit and powers of leadership.

PORTEOUS, Sergeant Major A W, OIB, Military Cross NOK: Mrs A W Porteous, St Leonard's, Dunedin. Awarded for gallantry on April 26 and bravery on the nights of May 2 and 3. When all the officers of his company were killed and wounded, he organized and led his company, continually exposing himself for four hours and showing fine military spirit and powers of military leadership. PORTEOUS, Sergeant-Major Belonged to the Otago Infantry Battalion and had been stationed in Central Otago. His next of kin is Mr A W Porteous, St Denis, Dunedin.
