The wife of Harold (the crossbowman), she was a servant at Blackthorne before moving to Claxby.
The son of Harold (the crossbowman), he grew up in Blackthorne. He is expected to follow his father into service as a grog.
Adigius's servant from Blackthorne. Alfred spends far too much of his time trying to organise the other servants, and is fastidious to a fault, at least as concerns the work of others. As a result, he is unpopular with the other servants, and often squabbles with Oorscht. Alfred is also unusually nosey for covenfolk, and has been known to evesdrop on the doings of the magi.
Alfred has recently married Edith, a housekeeper from Paris.
Alfred's wife. A housekeeper from Paris, and formerly a servant of one of the Masters there.
An extremely large man, who does "heavy lifting" for Jock.
Hannah is a nun. An "orphan", her childhood was spent in a nunnery in Lubeck. She is a tutor to William and Callista's children. She is concerned for their spiritual upbringing. Hannah does not get on well with Sabine, and she most certainly does not approve of Hans.
Sister Hannah speaks Latin, is an excellent scribe, and is competant to teach the arts. She has an excellent grasp of theology, and has already written one book on it to grace the Covenant library.
William and Callista's servants, the family has served William's for many generations. Frederick serves as William's valet, and has just begun to experience the onset of arthritis. Helgi is their personal cook, and a bit of a gossip. Both can speak Latin.
Callista's maid. She is quite opinionated, often arguing with her mistress. She has recently married Bruce the Gay, and has moved out of the manor house.
William and Callista's eldest daughter, Sabine is fifteen years old. She is uncooperative and very reluctant to give her word to any adult (as she wouldn't like to tell a lie, she explains). William and Callista seem curiously reluctant to instruct Sabine. The English grogs have even noted that William sometimes asks Sabine's permission before planning a family expedition. When questioned about this, the German grogs enigmatically say "it has always been this way". The children of the Covenant like Sabine and she spends most of her time looking after them. She prefers to play with them either outside the covenant or near the Oak tree in the centre of the covenant.
Thomas, William and Jonathon are William and Callista's sons and Kalensa and Britomart are their younger daughters. Thomas and William are due to be apprenticed soon. Kalensa is mildly retarded and spends most of her time either with Sabine, or watching William work. The grogs think that Kalensa is very strange and that this is almost certainly evidence of Callista's supposed faerie blood.
Bodvar is an agent of the Lubeck/Hamburg Alliance. His concern is the extension of the alliance to cover towns on the English coast. He is a bureaucrat involved in the administration of the alliance and its smooth interaction with the English authorities. Bodvar has studied the Gotland Alliance. Unlike Callista, Bodvar does not have a family stake in the alliance.
Bodvar is educated, speaks reasonable latin, and is an excellent scribe.
Ethelryd's manservant. He often squabbles with Alfred.
Helga is from Denmark, she travelled to England as a new bride with her husband Sven six years ago (1208). Sven got himself killed by the son of a drunken Baron in Horncastle three months after arriving. Helga was most distressed at the time, and prepared to travel back to her family as a widow. Fortunately just as she was boarding her ship in London, two of the Baron's armsmen caught up with her and paid out the bloodgeld as set by the magistrate for his son's deed. Being a woman of simple pleasures, Helga was brought out of her sorrow by the arrival of a big bag of shillings, and proceeded to spend it all at the nearest Tavern along with her husband's money, Allain's Tavern as fate would have it. Helga became one of Allain's long term tenants, spending her money quite shrewdly and managing to last three years of carousing. When the money recently ran out, Allain kept her on as a barmaid serving patrons in the bar, as the patrons enjoy her friendly nature and ample bosom.
Phyllis is and will always be a spinster. Though quite attractive and able to charm any man she chooses, she holds a deep and unwavering disdain for men. She sees them as weak and craven, falling to their animal instincts. In her heart she feels that women are superior, and she sees her ability to seduce men for her own purposes as a excellent demonstration of this superiority.
